The Game

I think the reason the United States is having such trouble with its strategy in the Middle East is that Iran is playing chess, and the US is playing checkers (poorly, at that).

Once Bush figures this out (if he ever does), he'll find he's in a position where he's going to lose his queen and a bunch of other pieces as well. And though he might inflict some pain on his opponent, he's still going to come out on the sorry end of the volley.

The only way Bush can win at this point is to pick up the game board and toss it across the room (i.e. use nukes). Of course, that will show extremely poor sportsmanship, and no one will want to play with him anymore.

Mate in two.

Nancy Pelosi to the Rescue

In a feeble attempt to actually do something useful, outgoing Representative Cynthia McKinney announced a bill today to impeach President Bush. Not realizing that she actually DOESN'T represent the Deomcrats, Nancy Pelosi rushed to Bush's aid in making it clear that she will not entertain proposals to sanction Bush when she ascends her throne as Speaker of the House.

abraham: Bush Approval Slips to 'All Time Low' of 30 Percent in Latest Zogby Poll

By the time Nixon resigned his numbers were down to 24%. Only 6% more to go. Of course, being highly competitive, Bush may well hold out until it dips below 24%, just so he can claim the dubious honor of having the lowest recorded approval rating of any modern president.

samir: Is it too naive to hope for guilty verdicts all around just about when Bush's numbers dip into the teens, making the Dems look all to stupid for not moving forward with his impeachment fast enough? Probably... wake me up when it's over.

To-Murrow Never Dies

MSNBC's anti-O'Reilly Keith Olbermann has been using his soapbox to deliver blistering tirades against Bush and mock his failure of a presidency. If you haven't seen them then get thee to YouTube and do some catching up. I just wish it didn't take three and a half years for someone to finally come out and say the obvious. But, better late than never.

While Olbermann's rising ratings possibly portend a collective shift back to sanity for our nation, it doesn't necessarily mean Americans are taking away the right lesson. My cynical guess is that most of his viewers are just happy to see someone, anyone, on TV rip Bush a new asshole every week.

Tell us how you really feel, Keith. And while you're at it, please take a swipe at the idiot enablers in our country, i.e. my fellow citizens, and let them know it's their fault, too.

Impeachment Watch

Part One in a long running series counting down to the finale: the impeachment of George Walker Bush.

Embittered Insiders Turn Against Bush (Washington Post)
Adelman, a former Reagan administration official and onetime member of the Iraq war brain trust, is only the latest voice from inside the Bush circle to speak out against the president or his policies. Heading into the final chapter of his presidency, fresh from the sting of a midterm election defeat, Bush finds himself with fewer and fewer friends. Some of the strongest supporters of the war have grown disenchanted, former insiders are registering public dissent and Republicans on Capitol Hill blame him for losing Congress.

Oh, we'll get you too, Ken Adelman. There's a blank plaque in the trophy room with your name already embossed on it.

Useful Idiots

It's nice to see someone finally calling out Tom Friedman for the self-conflated jack-ass that he actually is:

Useful Idiots (The Nation)

Friedman thinks he's an expert on the Middle East because he has (or claims he has) friends from there. What Friedman never considered is that he buddies up with people who already share his idiotic ideas about Arabs and the Muslim world. In every society there are the sell-outs. In the Arab world, these are the ones who regard an American invasion and occupation as a positive step (the ones who still think this even in the wake of the Iraq fiasco are psychopaths).
